About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

  1. Several years ago, I bought a Husqvarna 16″ bar saw with a compression release button. BEST thing for my senior arms for starting a saw. I don’t have to fight against the motor to start it.

  2. So.. im going to talk about the moisture in wood and why some have issues getting the wood to dry out. This seems to be a common issue for people online. Its how you STACK your wood.. you need the wood to be stacked so it has proper airflow so it CAN dry out.. you leaving it in a pile on the ground… wont do it.. because wood LOVES moisture and will pull it from the ground. You want to cut your wood to its smallest size for burning.. then stack it in a way so air can touch all sides of the wood and moisture has plenty of chance to escape. I would suggest get some old pallets for free off craigslist… and stack the wood on them so its not sitting on the ground. Then if you want you can put a tarp ABOVE it just to stop rain from affecting it.. but its not necessary until your like 3-4 weeks from using it. DO NOT put your wood in a shed once you cut it… you want the sun and air to dry it.. if you use a shed it should be AFTER the wood is dry. Not before. you could build glass shed and the thermal dynamics of the sun hitting the glass heating the shed would also help.. but thats beyond the scope of this comment. Remember the smaller the end cord of wood is.. the faster it will dry.
How do i know this.. my family used to use wood to burn during the harsh nj winters… I would be the one who went out and collected it and made sure that we had plenty of wood for winter.. i hated it as a kid… but looking back.. i have some fond memories and it taught me alot that i didnt know i would need. One is having patients and two is planning. I had to plan what i wanted to cut about 2 seasons in advance.. so when it comes to planning other things like vacations i now plan 2-4 years in advance.
    This was a good video.

  3. You know when some clouds are moving through, I run out as fast as I can to get some work done. Then run into the shade until the clouds shows up again

  4. YES!! I would LOVE to see a video on why I might fail at Homesteading. I believe that is just as important as why I might succeed.
I thought that was funny how you showed the proper, correct way to start a chainsaw then turned around and did everything the exact opposite, when starting it in the air. LOL God Bless! Carmen

  5. Definitely want the video on why people fail at living off grid. That would be really interesting…love the nugget on picking your battles…..how true

  6. After seeing this video I went straight out to my chainsaws and had a look at them. Been using chainsaws since I was a teenager “I’m now 50” and I have never taken any notice of the foot plate on the handle, mostly started them in the air. Great video, taught me something new, thumbs up for this one.
